DAVIDSON EKES OUT SINGLES POINT IN CHAOTIC CLIMAX TO SECURE TEAM DRAW

The 2021 Tanglwyst Cup took place over 2-4 September. Taking place in the Midlands, it would be the first time that the competition had been held on home soil without the inclusion of a single round of links golf. There was no quality lacking however, in the courses played over the three days. And, for the second year in succession, the cup would be decided on the final hole of the final day.

Day 1 belonged to Edwards PEA as a misfiring Beige Against The Machine fell short of the mark in the fourballs and eventually succumbed to a 2-1 overnight deficit. A long and grueling round at Northamptonshire County left numerous players in need of a quick recovery ahead of day 2 and the hot tub back at base camp provided just the ticket.

Jenkins needed a big response from his BATM on day 2 and he selected his two strongest possible pairings in the hope of ensuring nothing worse than a 3-3 score line heading into the final day. The 3-3 was achieved but not quite in the manner expected. BATMs #1 pick Godders struggled to find his top gear for a second day in the row and along with his partner King was defeated on the final hole at Hollinwell. Cooke and Mullin proved too strong in the final pairing which left BATMs lamb pairing of Jenkins and Davidson to provide the shock of the week as they defeated the previously unbeatable pairing of Hoare and Laffan in a ding-dong encounter.

The teams therefore headed into singles tied at 3-3 for the first time in the competitions history. The outcome of three of the matches were never rarely in doubt after the opening holes and it would be the remaining 3 that would ebb and flow during the afternoon changing the projected final score as the holes passed by. Both teams stood as the projected winners at various moments of the back 9 but after Godwin imploded from the middle of the 15th fairway to hand Edwards victory, the score read 6-4 to PEA with only the two middle matches still in session. The 6-6 draw looked a formality as Davidson went dormy 3 and King edged ahead of Laffan. King would close out his match with a hole to spare but Davidson conceded the 16th and 17th holes and followed it up with a hooked tee-shot into the hedgerow on 18. With Shirley in play it now seemed that the cup would be travelling with Edwards back to West London. With Davidson you must expect the unexpected, on and off the course, and so it proved as he struck a miracle 3rd shot through a tree and onto the back edge of the green. He would still take another 3 shots to get down, which left Shirley with 3ft down the hill to secure the team victory. Sadly for PEA it slid by and for the second year in a row Davidson was left relieved and perplexed as to how hed managed to secure the draw for his team. For the first time in 11 showings, Edwards finally put his money where his mouth was and led his team by example in bringing home his first ever 3 point haul and with it, the Player of The Year accolade.
