KING HOLDS HIS NERVE TO END THREE YEAR TANGLWYST DEADLOCK

With the scoreboard at 6-5 and one match remaining, there was a sense of inevitability that TC22 would end, yet again, as a third consecutive draw. However, unlike the previous two iterations, one key factor would come to the fore quality.

The 2022 Tanglwyst Cup, took place over 29 September1 October. Another round of baby arrivals meant that there were two notable absentees in Hoare and Cooke, paving the way for a long-awaited return from Dave Mullin and a debut to TCs first international player, Brent Piattelli.

The location was Dorset a long nurtured brain child of Davidsonin what would prove to be the most varied set of courses and conditions played at any Tanglwyst to date. Davidsons planning and online-shopping skills were one of numerous unknows at TC22: did Andy really have a work friend?; was DMul still unbeatable?; would there be another weather wash-out; and could Brent fill the shoes of Cooke at such short notice? All would be answered...

Round 1 was played at the stunning Parkstone GC. Piatelli, having only just been introduced to the group, stood up to hit the opening tee-shot and, despite it sailing straight into trouble, it was clear that he would take some beating. He proved to be too much for King & Edwards and a 3-0 lead to the Black Birds looked on the cards until A.Mullin and Godwin surged from 3 down to claim a vital point for the men in red.

Round 2 will not live long in the memory as miserable conditions on a poor course was met with three one-sided affairs. Only one match would even reach the 16th as Turkish Delight emerged 2-1 victors on the day to level the scores at 3-3.

Both the weather and course were greatly improved for the final round singles matches, albeit the wind was up and a stern challenge lay in wait. Both teams collected a point from each of the first two groups to leave the scoreboard at 5-5. Having battled the course and internal demons, Jenkins dug deep to keep his match alive against A.Mullin but eventually fell short on the penultimate hole. Laffan holed from 8 feet at the 17th to keep the cup alive for the Black Birds but an adrenaline-fuelled 5-iron found the 18th fairway bunker. King remained undeterred by the moment and, having reached greenside in 2, delivered the knock-out blow with a Southerndown style chip-and-run that left Laffan with no option but to concede the hole, the match and the Tanglwyst Cup to Turkish Delight.
